ExpressVPN Review updated 12 June 2020

Ever since it burst onto the scene in 2009, ExpressVPN has continued to grow from strength to strength. So much so, that it eventually earned itself a reputation as one of the most secure and reliable VPNs around.

Fast forward to the present day, and ExpressVPN continues to receive plaudits from privacy enthusiasts from all over the world. And this is all thanks to its military-grade encryption, excellent geo-unblocking capabilities, as well as their outstanding customer support. But sometimes, an excellent service comes at a price, and ExpressVPN is no exception to this.

With prices starting from $6.67 a month, ExpressVPN is more expensive than many other VPNs on the market. But given the exceptional level of protection and fantastic speeds that it provides, it’s easy to see why ExpressVPN remains such a popular provider.

So, after putting ExpressVPN through its paces with a series of tests, I’d like to share my impartial opinion of this service so that you can make an informed decision as to whether this VPN is the right choice for you.

ExpressVPN provides support for secure encryption protocols including OpenVPN and IKEv2. When combined with additional security features including a kill switch along with DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak protection, you can rest safe knowing that your data is highly unlikely to become subject to unauthorised access.

The creators of ExpressVPN, ExpressVPN International Ltd, are based in the British Virgin Islands, meaning they don’t form part of any intelligence groups such as the Fourteen Eyes alliance. Those conscious over their online security and privacy will appreciate this, as there are no obligations for the provider to hand over your details to the authorities.

Plus, there’s even the option to purchase your subscription using their Tor (.onion) website or by using an anonymous form of payment such as Bitcoin. All in all, ExpressVPN’s military-grade encryption, strict no-logs policy, and support for the most reliable protocols available nowadays ensures that your data will be kept safe and secure at all times.

Speed and perfomance

ExpressVPN is renowned for its consistency in terms of server speed, and I found this to be the case. I tested various servers from across the globe including those based in the UK, USA, the Netherlands, and the Bahamas, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there was little to no difference in terms of the speed between each server.

If a VPN slows down your connection too much, then you could struggle to perform online tasks such as online gaming or HD-quality video streaming. Luckily, I didn’t experience this when testing ExpressVPN. Here are my speed test results which display my connection speeds both before and after connecting to the London Docklands server.

Speed conclusion

With little slowdown when connected to ExpressVPN, you’ll be able to stream high-quality content, browse the web, and perform many other online tasks without hindrance.

If like me, you own multiple devices and you’d like to protect each of them using just one VPN subscription, you’re able to do so with ExpressVPN, as it supports up to five simultaneous connections. Regardless of the operating system (OS) that you use, ExpressVPN has you covered.

It supports all major platforms including Windows and Mac, alongside many other devices including Amazon Fire TV, routers, Android TV, not to mention the dedicated extensions that are available for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

The first OS I set the service up on was Windows, which involved the following steps:

  • Logging into the ExpressVPN website and clicking the Setup button in the top right-hand corner of the page.
  • Downloading and installing the Windows application
  • Pasting in an activation code when prompted
  • Connecting to a VPN server of my choice.

I found the setup process to be straightforward, as I was up and running in no time. But if you happen to stumble upon any issues or you’re not quite sure how to get started, you’re in luck. There are several detailed setup guides available via the official ExpressVPN website, or you have the option to contact support via numerous means, as you’ll discover later in the review.

APPS conclusion

With applications available for all major platforms, ExpressVPN is an ideal solution for providing enhanced protection for both your desktop and mobile devices.

Even for the most advanced users, a selection of over 3,000 servers in over 94 countries is more than sufficient enough. From the UK to the US, Taiwan to Australia, and everywhere in between, the vast choice of servers covers all four corners of the globe, making it an ideal choice for travellers.

And if you happen to be travelling to China or any other strict location where strong censorship is in place, you’ll find that ExpressVPN can bypass any restrictions. As a result, you’re free to access blocked websites and communication services including Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp as you please.

SERVERS conclusion

With over 3,000 servers in over 160 locations, ExpressVPN allows you to surf the web anonymously, stream your favourite content, and bypass internet censorship wherever you are.

One of the biggest reasons for wanting to use a VPN nowadays is accessing geo-blocked services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Both services change their library depending on your geographical location, so it’s not always possible to watch all your favourite content. To make matters worse, many streaming services now block the use of VPNs altogether.

Luckily, this is no longer an issue when using ExpressVPN. When testing out the service, I was able to access various Netflix content libraries, including those in the UK, USA, Canada, and the Netherlands. Thanks to ExpressVPN’s excellent speeds and geo-unblocking capabilities, I was able to access geo-restricted content from various other services, too.

If you’re a P2P user, you’ll need to protect yourself at all costs. Otherwise, you risk your internet service provider (ISP), the government, or another third-party snooping in on your activity which could land you in all kinds of trouble. Thankfully, ExpressVPN supports torrenting on its servers, meaning you’ll be able to freely and securely download torrents to your heart’s content.

Сompatibility conclusion

Thanks to its exceptional geo-unblocking capabilities, you can use ExpressVPN to easily access a wealth of services and websites from across the globe and protect yourself while torrenting.

Support should be high up on your priority list when it comes to choosing a VPN provider. After all, if things start to go wrong, you’ll need to know that you can rely on the provider to help you put things right. Thankfully, the customer support team at ExpressVPN are quick to respond, knowledgeable, and happy to help. Plus, I found that getting everything set up on my Windows device only took a few minutes.

If you encounter common issues such as the connection progress being stuck halfway, your best bet would be to use ExpressVPN’s excellent 24/7 live chat service, which is usually the quickest and most convenient way to gain assistance. However, if you’d prefer to fix things yourself, then the detailed knowledgebase includes plenty of articles and videos to have you up and running in no time.

Support conclusion

Thanks to ExpressVPN’s 24/7 live chat support, it couldn’t be simpler to get the help you need, while their detailed FAQ and knowledgebase sections make it quick and easy to fix things yourself.

Value for money

ExpressVPN costs more than many of its competitors, considering NordVPN and Surfshark are available at a fraction of the cost. But if you’re looking for top-of-the-range protection along with excellent speeds for browsing and streaming, you can’t go wrong with this particular provider.

ExpressVPN also allows for up to five simultaneous connections per subscription, which should be sufficient enough for most users. But if you’re looking to protect more devices, NordVPN and CyberGhost are viable alternatives, as each service allows for up to six and seven simultaneous connections respectively.

Value for money conclusion

ExpressVPN isn’t the cheapest VPN service around, but its top-notch security, exceptional speeds and user friendly platform make it the best choice if you can afford that little extra.
